Every year someone declares eBay dead, and every year millions of items sell on it anyway. So let’s answer this honestly, without the hype either direction: is eBay still worth your time in 2026?
What eBay still does better than almost anyone
Reach. eBay has an enormous, ready-to-buy audience and it spans nearly every category – electronics, collectibles, parts, fashion, oddball stuff no other marketplace wants. If you have something unusual, eBay is often the one place a buyer is actually searching for it. That deep catalog and giant buyer base is the whole reason it still matters.
It also has real infrastructure: buyer protection, shipping tools, and a search engine that rewards good listings. For a lot of niches, it remains the highest-intent marketplace out there.
The honest downsides
Fees are real and they take a meaningful chunk of each sale, especially once you factor in ads. Competition is fierce, so lazy listings sink. And the learning curve – limits, policies, metrics – can feel like a lot when you are starting. None of that makes eBay not worth it. It just means eBay rewards effort and punishes coasting.
How to make eBay clearly worth it
The trick is to stop treating eBay as your entire business and start treating it as one strong channel among several. When you list the same inventory across multiple marketplaces, eBay stops being a bet and becomes a bonus – another place your stuff can sell.
This is exactly how I run it with Nifty. It uses AI to build each listing and crosslist it everywhere at once, then detects the sale and pulls the item down across the board when it moves. So eBay’s reach works for me without me babysitting it, and if a buyer on another marketplace grabs it first, that is fine too. One listing effort, many storefronts, no oversells. That is what turns eBay from maybe worth it into absolutely worth it.
Cut what is not earning
Worth it also depends on what you are carrying. Dead stock that never moves drags down your whole operation. Every so often it pays to audit the entire catalog and decide what to reprice, bundle, or retire so you are only spending effort on items that actually sell. That kind of full-catalog sweep is a great occasional job to hand to AI rather than grind through by hand. I cover the approach in my AI Reselling Playbook.
Bottom line: yes, eBay is still worth it in 2026 – for sellers who use its reach without living inside it. Price for the fees, list quality items, spread them across marketplaces, and let automation carry the busywork. Make eBay one of many channels that earn for you while you sleep. Do less, earn more.
