You’ve seen the Promote button and wondered if it’s a magic sales boost or just Mercari nudging you to slash prices. Fair question. Let’s break down what it actually does so you can decide whether to tap it.
What Promote actually does
Promote bumps your listing higher in search – but there’s a catch. To use it, you drop your price by at least 5%, and that drop is permanent. Mercari then pushes the listing up and notifies everyone who liked it that the price fell. So it’s really two things at once: a visibility boost and a price cut married together.
You can generally only promote the same item once every 24 hours, and each new promote has to beat the item’s lowest previous price. So it’s not something you can spam forever.
When it’s worth it
Promote earns its keep when:
- Your item has likes but no offers – those likers get pinged and often bite.
- The item’s been sitting a while and you were going to lower the price anyway.
- You priced high on purpose and have room to come down.
In those cases you were going to drop the price regardless, so you might as well get the visibility bump and the like-notification for free.
When to skip it
Skip Promote when your price is already tight and a 5% cut wipes out your margin. Don’t promote a fresh listing either – give it time to sell at full price first. And if an item has zero likes, the notification perk does nothing, so a plain relist might serve you better. Promote is a tool, not a reflex.
The bigger lever: be everywhere
Here’s the honest truth – the fastest way to sell an item isn’t squeezing one more percent of visibility out of one app. It’s having the item live on every marketplace at once so more buyers see it, period. That’s what Nifty does: AI-written listings, crosslisted across Mercari, Poshmark, eBay, and more, with sale detection so you don’t double-sell. Promote nudges one listing; crosslisting multiplies all of them. Start there.
If you want the full playbook for selling faster without babysitting every listing, it’s in my AI Reselling Playbook.
Bottom line
Promote is worth it when you were going to drop the price anyway and want the extra eyeballs – otherwise it’s just giving away margin. Use it with intent, not on autopilot, and lean on crosslisting as your real growth lever. Do less, earn more.
