Depop Vacation Mode: Why Buyers Can’t Check Out (and How to Turn It Off)

You flip on Depop vacation mode for a long weekend, and now your inbox is full of “why can’t I check out?” messages. Nothing is broken. That is vacation mode doing exactly what it is built to do – and the fix takes about ten seconds once you know where to look.

Why buyers suddenly can’t buy

When vacation mode is on, your whole shop goes into pause. Buyers can still see your listings, but they cannot add anything to their bag or complete checkout. If someone already had an item in their bag, it stays stuck until you reopen. Depop also shows a banner on your shop letting shoppers know you are away, so most “can’t check out” complaints are simply people who did not notice it.

One thing worth knowing: vacation mode usually switches itself back off after about 7 days. So if you are away longer than a week, your shop may quietly reopen while you are still gone. Confirm the current window in the app before you rely on it.

How to turn Depop vacation mode off

Open the Depop app or the website, go to your shop settings, and toggle vacation mode off. Your listings go live again instantly and buyers can check out right away. The feature lives in settings on iOS and web, so if you only ever use an Android phone you may need to hop on the website to find the switch.

Quick sanity check after you flip it: open one of your own listings as if you were a shopper and make sure the buy button is active. If it still looks paused, fully close the app and reopen it.

The smarter move: never fully go dark

Here is the thing most sellers miss. Vacation mode only closes your Depop shop. If the same inventory is listed on eBay, Poshmark, Mercari and Vinted too, those shops keep selling while Depop naps. That is the whole point of crosslisting – one item, listed everywhere, so a break on one platform never means zero sales.

Nifty is how I keep every item live across marketplaces at once, list once and sell everywhere, and it detects the sale and pulls the item down elsewhere so you are not double-selling while you are away.

For the buyer messages piling up while you are out, that is a gap a crosslister does not cover – it does not answer your DMs. I lean on Claude to draft a warm batch of “I’m away, back on the 14th, your item is saved” replies so buyers stay excited instead of moving on. Bottom line

Buyers cannot check out because vacation mode paused your shop, and one toggle in settings brings it back. But the real win is building a shop that keeps earning even when one platform is closed. Do less, sell more, and let the machine cover for you while you actually take the vacation.
