Pricing by gut feeling is how you end up with a shop full of stuff that never sells, or worse, stuff that sells for a loss. The fix is boring and powerful: price off what things have actually sold for.
Asking prices lie, sold prices tell the truth
Anyone can list an item for a fantasy number. That tells you nothing. What matters is the sold price – what a real buyer actually paid. On eBay you can filter completed listings to show sold items, and that green number is your north star.
Look at a handful of recent sales for the same item in the same condition. Ignore the outliers at the top and bottom. The cluster in the middle is roughly what the market will pay you. That is your target, not the dream price some hopeful seller slapped on.
Work backward from profit
Once you know the realistic sold price, do quick math backward. Subtract your fees, subtract shipping, subtract what the item cost you. What is left is your profit. If that number is too thin or negative, this item is not worth your time, or you need to have paid less for it.
Good resellers price the sale in their head at the thrift store, not after the item is already sitting in a bin at home.
Condition and timing nudge the number
Sold comps give you the anchor, then you adjust. Better condition, complete with box and tags, or a hard-to-find variant earns a bump. Rough condition or missing pieces earns a trim. Seasonal items swing too – price the coat higher in fall than in spring. Small adjustments, real dollars.
Pricing a whole catalog without losing your mind
Checking comps for one item is quick. Doing it for a few hundred listings you already have live is a different beast, and that is where money quietly leaks – items priced months ago, things that would earn more bundled, dead stock you should just retire.
Bottom line: sold comps turn pricing from a guess into a plan. Your prices should make money while you sleep. Do less, earn more.
