The Ad Tax You Can Actually Turn Off

Let’s start with the part eBay doesn’t put in the seller newsletter: advertising is one of the best businesses eBay has.

Final value fees require them to build search, handle payments, run customer service, and eat return disputes. Ad revenue requires them to move your listing up a page. It’s close to pure margin, it grows every quarter, and the growth has to come from somewhere.

It comes from you.

This is one piece of a larger series on shrinking what eBay takes without giving up the income.

How the fee actually works

Promoted Listings General (eBay renamed Standard to the “general campaign strategy” – you will still hear both) charges an ad rate as a percentage of the total sale, on top of your final value fee, and only when the ad gets credited with the sale.

“Only when it works” sounds like a fair deal. Here is the catch, and it got significantly worse in January 2026.

Under the current US and Canada rules, the buyer who bought does not have to have clicked your ad at all. eBay charges the ad fee when someone purchases a promoted item that any buyer clicked on in the previous 30 days. One click by one stranger tags that listing for a month, and every sale in that window carries an ad fee. On a multi-quantity listing, a single click can mean a hundred chargeable sales.

That’s the whole problem in one sentence: you are frequently paying to win traffic you already had.

And it compounds with something from the shipping side of this series. Ad fees, like final value fees, are calculated on the total the buyer pays – shipping and tax included. So when postage rates go up, your ad bill quietly goes up too.

When ads genuinely earn their keep

I’m not going to tell you to zero it out everywhere. That’s lazy advice. Ads are real and they do work in specific situations:

Brand-new listings with no history. You have no sales velocity signal, so organic placement is rough. A modest ad rate for the first couple of weeks buys you the initial data.

Genuinely crowded categories. If four hundred sellers list the identical item, organic ranking is a lottery and ads are the entry fee.

Seasonal windows with a hard deadline. Halloween costumes in the first week of October. You can’t wait for organic to warm up.

Aged inventory you want gone. A 4% ad fee beats another six months of it sitting in a bin.

That’s the honest list. Notice what isn’t on it: everything you own, forever, at whatever rate eBay suggests.

The trap: eBay’s suggested ad rate

When you promote, eBay shows a suggested rate and calls it competitive. That number is generated by the company collecting the fee. It is not neutral advice, and it tends to run well above what you need.

Suggested rates also ratchet. Every seller who accepts the suggestion raises the ambient rate, which raises the next suggestion. It’s an auction where the auctioneer sets the opening bid and takes the commission.

If you’re going to run ads, set your own rate and go up only when the data says to.

How to audit your ad spend

Do this before you change anything.

Seller Hub > Advertising for the campaign dashboard, and Seller Hub > Reports to download the detail. Advertising is its own top-level tab now, not a section inside Marketing. Pull the last 90 days.

Find your total ad fees paid for the period. Say it out loud. Most sellers have never seen this number and it stings.

Look at ad fees as a percentage of your total sales. Add that to your final value fee percentage. That combined number is your actual eBay take rate, and it’s usually a lot higher than the fee page implies.

Now the important column: for each promoted item that sold, ask whether that listing was already selling fine before you promoted it. Those are your refund candidates.

How to turn them off

All at once: Seller Hub > Advertising > select your campaign > End campaign. If you ever used Easy Boost in the app, end that separately under Advertising > Manage easy boost – it keeps auto-promoting every new listing until you do.

Selectively, which is what I’d actually do: leave ads on new listings and aged inventory, pull them off your proven sellers.

Check for auto-enrollment. eBay has periodically opted sellers into promotional programs by default, and bulk listing tools sometimes carry an ad rate forward on every new listing without you noticing. Go look at whether new listings are being promoted automatically. A lot of people find out they’ve been running ads for a year they never consciously started.

What to do instead

Ads are a way to buy visibility. There are cheaper ways to earn it:

Fix your item specifics. Free, and it does more for search placement than a 3% ad rate. eBay’s own size standardization crackdown is a reminder that structured data is what the search engine actually reads.

Better titles and better photos. Boring, unglamorous, works.

Sell in more places. A listing that’s live on five marketplaces doesn’t need to win the eBay lottery. That’s the diversification argument, and it’s the strongest one in this series.

Send buyers to a store you own. No ad auction at all when the traffic is yours.

Where AI comes in

Nifty already handles the listing engine – AI-written listings, crosslisted everywhere, delisted when they sell. That’s exactly what keeps you from being dependent on eBay’s ad auction in the first place, because your item is live in five places instead of fighting for one slot.

What no crosslister will do is open your Promoted Listings report, line it up against your organic sales history item by item, and tell you these 47 listings were selling steadily before you promoted them, and here is what you have paid in ad fees on sales you were already getting. That specific analysis – reading two reports and doing the before-and-after comparison per SKU – is the gap.

That’s what I hand to Claude. (Claude is an AI that works like a virtual assistant – it actually controls your computer for you and automates the boring stuff. Use my link and you may qualify for a free week to test it, subject to availability: https://claude.ai/referral/LJhm3qPEVQ)

The setup is the whole trick, and it lives in the AI Reselling Playbook. If you just want the fees landing in the right tax bucket, grab the free Schedule C Expense Tracker.

Why this one stings

Plenty of sellers are past irritated with eBay at this point. Fees that creep, rates that change with a day’s notice, disputes decided in seconds, and a company that just settled a stalking campaign against two reporters for $55.7 million, having admitted to six felony offenses in a 2024 deferred prosecution agreement.

Ads are where that frustration has somewhere to go. Final value fees are compulsory – you cannot opt out and still sell. Ad spend is entirely voluntary. It is money you choose to hand over, every single month, on top of the cut they already take.

Turning off ads that were never earning isn’t a protest and it isn’t a boycott. You keep every dollar of your income and your buyers notice nothing. You just stop volunteering. Do that across the whole list and the difference is real money staying in your pocket instead of theirs.

Bottom line

Promoted Listings is not a scam. It’s a real service that sometimes works. But it’s sold to you by the company that profits from you never checking, at a rate that company suggests, using an attribution model that company designed. Treat it like any other line item on your P&L: prove it earns, or cut it.

Pull the 90-day report today. Whatever you find, you’ll be making an informed decision by lunch.

Worth confirming yourself: eBay’s ad products and attribution rules have changed more than once recently, so check the current terms for your account and category rather than assuming last year’s setup still applies.

Next up: why eBay should only be one slice of your income. And if you sell on Depop, read what sellers there say happened after they boosted – the downside there is reportedly much worse than a wasted fee.

New here?
