Realized immediately, unboosted it within minutes. And then their sales fell off a cliff – over 80%, essentially overnight – and never recovered.

Not a slow seasonal decline. Not a bad month. A step function, the day after, permanent.

I want to handle this one carefully, because it matters that I’m straight with you about what’s known and what isn’t.

What’s actually established, and what isn’t

Not established: that Depop suppresses accounts for unboosting. Depop has never acknowledged anything of the sort, there is no published policy describing it, and no one outside Depop has data proving the mechanism. Sellers describe the pattern to each other. That is not the same as it being true.

There are also completely mundane explanations that fit the same facts. Depop weights recency only slightly (its own documentation says listing date has “significantly less influence” than relevance), seasonal swings on Depop are brutal, and the platform has changed its algorithm and fee structure repeatedly. A sales collapse that coincides with a boost may well be a sales collapse that merely coincides with a boost. Humans are exceptional at finding causes for bad luck.

What is established, and this is worth knowing regardless: per Depop’s own help documentation, if a buyer saw your boosted listing and then buys within 28 days, the boosting fee still applies – even if you unboosted in the meantime. So unboosting does not cleanly undo the decision. There’s a tail on it, by design and by policy.

That’s the documented part. The suppression part is seller lore. I’d rather tell you which is which than let a scary story do the persuading.

Why the advice is the same either way

Here’s the thing: it doesn’t actually matter whether the shadowban theory is true. The right move is identical.

If suppression is real, boosting carries a catastrophic tail risk for a fee you didn’t need to pay.

If suppression isn’t real, boosting is still a fee on sales you’d likely have gotten anyway, on a platform where organic reach is genuinely achievable.

Either way the answer is: don’t boost. Build inventory that doesn’t need it.

This is the same argument as eBay’s Promoted Listings, just with worse downside. Paid visibility on marketplaces is sold to you by the company collecting the fee, priced by that company, and measured by that company’s attribution model. On Depop you may also be gambling with something you can’t get back.

Think twice. The upside is a few extra views. The reported downside is your business.

Sell things that don’t need a boost

The real skill isn’t working the algorithm. It’s sourcing inventory people are already looking for.

What moves on Depop without help:

Y2K and 2000s-specific pieces – low-rise, baby tees, mesh, rhinestones

Recognizable branded vintage, even mid-tier

Genuine streetwear with searchable brand names

Distinctive silhouettes that photograph well on a grid

Anything currently visible on TikTok – Depop trends follow, fast

Coquette, grunge revival, whatever the current aesthetic is when you read this

What needs a boost because nobody’s searching for it:

Unbranded fast fashion with no distinguishing features

Basics with no story

Anything you’d describe as “cute top”

Sizes and cuts outside what the platform’s buyers skew toward

If you find yourself wanting to boost an item, that’s information. It’s usually telling you the item is wrong for the platform, not that the item needs money spent on it.

Free things that beat boosting

Relist, do not just edit. Depop has no refresh or bump button, and editing a listing does not change its listing date. Deleting and relisting (use “copy listing”) is what actually resets it. Free either way.

List consistently. A few items daily beats forty items on Sunday.

First photo is everything. It’s a visual grid on a phone. Natural light, clean background, styled.

Search-language titles and tags. Write what a buyer types – “y2k low rise cargo” not “cute pants.”

Reply fast – though Depop states plainly that response time is not a ranking signal. Fast responders sell more because buyers buy, not because the algorithm rewards it.

Get your listing details right. Per Depop, relevance has the biggest impact on ranking – accurate title, description, brand, category and colour. That is the strongest signal you actually control.

Bring your own traffic. Post on TikTok and Instagram. Traffic you generate isn’t subject to anyone’s algorithm.

Protecting yourself either way

Don’t put all your inventory anywhere. If a single tap can plausibly cost you 80% of a channel, that channel should not be your whole business. Everything in this series applies to Depop exactly as much as to eBay, and the store you own is the only channel where nobody can change the rules on you.

Keep your own numbers. Track views, likes and sales per week yourself. If something changes, you’ll have a before-and-after instead of a feeling. Sellers who can document a pattern are the reason any of these stories get taken seriously.

If you do get hit, keep listing and keep refreshing. Sellers who report recovery describe it taking weeks of consistent activity, not a support ticket.

Where AI helps

Nifty handles the listing engine – AI-written listings pushed to Depop and everywhere else, pulled down automatically when they sell. That’s what makes “don’t depend on Depop” a realistic plan instead of a slogan.

What no crosslister does is track your own visibility over time – logging views, likes and sales per listing week over week so that when something shifts you have actual data instead of a vibe. Building and maintaining that personal tracking record across platforms is the gap.

That’s the kind of thing I hand to Claude. (Claude is an AI that works like a virtual assistant – it actually controls your computer for you and automates the boring stuff. Use my link and you may qualify for a free week to test it, subject to availability: https://claude.ai/referral/LJhm3qPEVQ)

The setup is the whole trick, and mine’s in the AI Reselling Playbook.

It’s the same playbook everywhere

Worth zooming out, because this isn’t a Depop problem. It’s a marketplace problem.

Every platform sells you visibility, sets the price of that visibility, decides whether it worked, and keeps the fee either way. eBay does it with Promoted Listings. Depop does it with Boost. Poshmark does it with Promoted Closet. You are always bidding in an auction run by the person collecting the money.

A lot of sellers have quietly had enough of that arrangement – especially watching eBay pay $55.7 million to settle a stalking campaign against two journalists after admitting to six felony offenses, while still raising the rates on everyone else. You don’t have to quit any of these platforms to stop feeding the parts that are optional.

Boosting is optional. Ads are optional. Most of what these companies charge you beyond the base commission is optional. Keep the income, stop volunteering the extras.

Bottom line

I can’t tell you Depop shadowbans people who unboost, because nobody outside Depop knows that and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. What I can tell you is that boosting costs money, carries a documented 28-day fee tail you can’t cancel your way out of, and has at least one widely-repeated story attached to it that nobody has been able to rule out.

That’s a bad risk-reward on a platform where free reach is very much achievable. Source better, photograph better, list consistently, and let the item do the work.

Think twice before you boost. And if an item only sells when you pay for it, the item is the problem.

New here?
