Two things make it dangerous: hair-trigger cancellations, and what the platform does to your tracking afterward.

First, the cancellations. A buyer can open a case claiming they never received an item, and Depop can close it with a refund within minutes, without looking at a single fact. It doesn’t matter that USPS takes 24 to 48 hours to scan a package in, or that the post office is closed on weekends and holidays. Between a weekend and a holiday, a package that is genuinely on its way can go five or even six days before it scans, looking “not shipped” the entire time. The dispute interface barely functions and there is no real review. Sellers are told to respond to disputes in time, but responding fast can trigger the refund faster. The system rewards the buyer who files early and punishes the seller who shows up to defend themselves.

Then there is the label. When Depop cancels a transaction for not being scanned yet, it also cancels the mailing label. The label still works, so the package keeps moving and reaches the buyer anyway. The buyer ends up with an item they were just refunded for, for free. But the tracking number is now dead. When the package finally scans in later that night, the number reads as invalid, and it stays invalid forever. There is no proof the item was ever mailed, and there never will be.

That is not a glitch. It is a design choice, and it only cuts one way. It erases the one piece of evidence a seller would use to fight a wrongful refund, which conveniently means Depop never has to make it right. The buyer keeps the item and the money, Depop washes its hands of the mistake, and the seller eats the entire loss.

This is what selling on Depop actually looks like now. A platform that can refund a buyer in two minutes, destroy your proof of shipping on the way out, and leave you nothing to appeal with. It used to be about the fashion and the community. Now it is built to protect the platform at the seller’s expense.

If you sell on Depop, this will reach you eventually. Have you run into it?
