You finally got serious about tags. Your newest listings have hashtags, style attributes, item specifics, the whole thing. Then you scroll down your catalog and there are a thousand older listings sitting there completely bare. That is usually the moment a reseller quietly decides to leave them alone forever. Do not leave them alone. Tags are how buyers actually find you, and an untagged listing is close to invisible.
Why half your catalog has no tags
This is not a you problem, it is a normal side effect of running a real shop for a while. The usual culprits:
- You listed fast in the early days and skipped every optional field just to get items live.
- The marketplace added new tag or attribute fields after you had already published, and old listings do not get them retroactively.
- You crosslisted, and the fields that do not map cleanly between platforms landed empty on the far end.
- Your keyword strategy got better over time, so your oldest listings are tagged for a version of your shop that no longer exists.
None of that matters now. What matters is that every bare listing is one that will not show up when someone searches the exact thing you are holding in your hand.
What tags are actually doing on each platform
Tags are not decoration. They are the input the search engine reads. Roughly how it breaks down:
- Depop: hashtags plus the style, color and category attributes feed in-app search and the Explore feed. A bare listing is mostly relying on luck.
- eBay: item specifics are the structured filters buyers click down the side of search results. Leave one blank and you get filtered out of that search entirely, no matter how good your title is.
- Etsy: tags are a direct ranking input that works alongside your title, and every unused tag slot is a wasted one.
- Poshmark and Mercari: category, size, color, brand and the keywords in your description do the tag job even where the field is not literally called a tag.
- Your crosslister: internal tags and labels keep your own catalog searchable, which is what makes any future bulk action possible at all.
Field names and tag limits change constantly, so check the current setup on each platform before you build your keyword list.
Please do not do this by hand
Run the math before you open a single edit screen. A thousand listings, ninety seconds each to think up tags and type them in, across every marketplace you sell on. That is a hundred hours. Two and a half working weeks of your one life, sitting at a laptop putting words into boxes, for a job that creates nothing new and that a machine does while you are asleep.
And it is not a one-time hundred hours. Marketplaces add fields. Your keyword strategy changes. Your catalog keeps growing. Do this manually once and you have signed up to do it again every year, forever, in exchange for nothing.
This is the single most common way resellers quietly burn their weekends. It feels productive because you are moving, but nobody has ever grown a shop by typing the word “vintage” four hundred times. Busy work is still work you are not being paid for.
The smarter fix: hand the backfill to AI
Here is the thing about tags. Going forward, this is already a solved problem for me. Nifty writes my listing details with AI and pushes them out to every marketplace at once, so anything I list today goes live properly tagged everywhere without me thinking about it.
The gap is the backlog. No crosslister goes back through hundreds of listings you already published and refills empty tag and item specific fields in bulk, one marketplace at a time. That is the piece I hand to Claude. (Claude is an AI that works like a virtual assistant – it actually controls your computer for you and automates the boring stuff. Use my link and you may qualify for a free week to test it, subject to availability: https://claude.ai/referral/LJhm3qPEVQ)
What I use it for specifically: sweeping the whole catalog to find every listing with missing or thin tags, drafting the right keywords for each one based on the item itself, and applying them across those listings in one pass instead of me opening a thousand edit screens. Same idea for empty eBay item specifics and blank Depop style attributes. It is a one time cleanup that would otherwise never get done, because let us be honest, it never does get done. The exact setup lives in my AI Reselling Playbook.
Then stop rebuilding the backlog
Once the sweep is finished, keep it clean automatically. This is where Nifty earns its keep: every new item gets built out once with the details filled in and pushed live across all your marketplaces together, so you are never quietly stacking up another thousand bare listings. If a platform adds a new field next year, you are backfilling a few months of items instead of your entire history.
Bottom line
Untagged listings do not sell, they just sit there taking up space and making your shop look bigger than your income. But the answer is not to go fix them one by one and lose a month of evenings doing it. Nobody is coming to thank you for the hours. The whole point of running a shop is that it makes you money while you live your actual life, and any job this repetitive should have stopped being yours a long time ago. Do the sweep once, hand it off, and go do something you would rather be doing.
