Buyer Opened a Case AND a Chargeback: What Happens Now

You are already dealing with a case inside the marketplace when you get the second gut-punch: the same buyer just filed a chargeback with their bank too. It feels like you are being hit from both sides for one order. Do not spiral – there are rules for exactly this situation, and they mostly work in your favor if you stay organized.

What actually happens when both are open

You cannot be forced to refund the same order twice, and platforms know it. When a chargeback lands on an order that already has an internal case:

  • The chargeback usually takes priority, because the bank outranks the marketplace. The platform will often pause or close the internal case and let the bank process play out.
  • The marketplace typically steps in to manage the chargeback on your behalf, forwarding your evidence to the bank.
  • You will not pay two refunds. The systems are designed to prevent a buyer double-dipping, even though it feels like they are trying.

So the two disputes do not stack into double liability. They collapse into one outcome, generally decided by the bank.

What you should do

  • Respond to both, but treat the chargeback as the main event since it usually governs the result.
  • Watch the clock. Chargeback windows are short, often around five days, and missing it can auto-decide the whole thing against you.
  • Do not refund manually while a chargeback is open. If you refund on your own and then lose the chargeback, you can end up out twice. Let the process resolve it.
  • Keep everything on-platform and documented – listing, tracking, delivery proof, and photos.

Rules shift, so confirm your platform’s current handling before you rely on the specifics.

Where AI keeps you sane

Nifty keeps the underlying inventory clean while you handle the dispute – its sale detection auto-delists sold items everywhere instantly, so you are never juggling a double dispute and an oversell at the same time. What Nifty does not do is help you write two coordinated responses under pressure. That gap goes to Claude.

I have it draft a firm, evidence-backed response tailored to each channel and keep the same facts consistent across both, so I am not contradicting myself between the case and the chargeback. The workflow is in my AI Reselling Playbook.

Bottom line

A case plus a chargeback on one order is not double the liability – the bank process usually takes over and you only pay once, if at all. Respond to both, prioritize the chargeback clock, do not refund manually mid-dispute, and keep your evidence consistent. Organized beats overwhelmed.
