Chargeback vs Platform Case: How They Differ and How to Fight Each

Two buyers, two disputes, two completely different games. One opened a case inside the marketplace. The other called their bank. They feel identical when the notification hits, but they are not, and treating them the same is how sellers lose money they should have kept. Let me draw the line clearly.

What each one actually is

A platform case is opened inside the marketplace – the buyer uses eBay’s Resolution Center, Poshmark’s support, or Mercari’s return flow. The platform is the judge, it rules under its own buyer guarantee, and it is generally faster and more predictable.

A chargeback skips the platform entirely. The buyer disputes the charge with their bank or card issuer, and the bank becomes the referee. This is slower, more formal, and often carries a dispute fee – on eBay it is commonly a $20 fee that can apply whether you win or lose. The bank makes the final call, not the marketplace.

How to fight a platform case

  • Respond fast and stay on-platform. Every message and photo becomes part of the record.
  • Upload your evidence directly into the case: listing screenshots, tracking with proof of delivery, and photos of the item before you shipped.
  • Follow the platform’s exact resolution steps. Skipping a step or going silent usually auto-decides against you.

How to fight a chargeback

  • Move immediately. Chargeback response windows are tight – often around five days – and missing it usually means an automatic loss.
  • Match your evidence to the reason code. “Item not received” needs tracking and proof of delivery to the right address. “Not as described” needs pre-shipment photos and your accurate listing.
  • Submit clean, organized documentation. The bank is skimming, so lead with the strongest proof.

Confirm current fees and timelines before you rely on them, since platforms adjust these regularly.

Where AI earns its keep

Nifty keeps the underlying mess from getting worse – its sale detection auto-delists sold items everywhere at once, so you are never fighting a dispute on an item that also oversold somewhere else. What Nifty does not do is assemble your rebuttal. That is the gap I hand to Claude.

I have it draft a tight, reason-code-matched dispute response and pull my listing and shipping details into one organized reply, so I am not scrambling under a five-day clock. The exact workflow is in my AI Reselling Playbook.

Bottom line

A platform case is judged by the marketplace and moves fast. A chargeback is judged by the bank, moves slow, and often costs a fee. Respond quickly to both, match your evidence to the exact claim, and keep your records clean. Prepared beats panicked every single time.
