eBay Is Banning Gift Card Sales on November 12: What Sellers Need to Know

If you sell gift cards, vouchers, or prepaid cards on eBay, you have a deadline. eBay is shutting the whole category down on November 12, and it reaches further than most people expect.

What is happening

eBay announced the change on its Australian site first, with a start date of November 12, 2026. The list of items that will no longer be allowed is long:

  • Collectible, empty, used, unactivated, or expired gift cards
  • Digital gift cards and gift card codes
  • eBay gift cards
  • Gift certificates and vouchers with a monetary value
  • Merchant and service gift cards
  • Open-loop and prepaid payment products
  • Prepaid gaming cards and gaming-platform gift cards

At first it looked like an Australia-only change. Then readers of Doctor of Credit with US eBay accounts reported getting an email about the same change, even though there is no public US policy page for it yet. So treat it as coming to the US and plan for November 12.

This is separate from eBay’s earlier announcement in August that it would stop selling its own eBay gift cards. The likely reason for the new ban is fraud, since gift cards are a favorite tool for scammers.

Who gets caught off guard

The obvious group is anyone flipping discounted gift cards. The less obvious group is collectors. Notice that the list includes collectible, empty, and expired cards. If you sell vintage store cards, themed cards in lots, or gaming cards as collectibles, those are on the list too. So are bundles that toss a gift card in as a bonus.

The cost of checking by hand

Here is the problem with a category ban. The risky listings are not always in the gift card category. They hide inside lots, bundles, and “bonus included” descriptions. Picture a 1,000-listing catalog. Opening each one and reading the title and description at about 20 seconds each is roughly five and a half hours. And you would have to do it again every time eBay adds another banned item, which it does several times a year.

It feels responsible while you are doing it. But it creates nothing, nobody pays you for it, and it is exactly the kind of chore that quietly eats a Sunday.

The smarter fix

Nifty is the engine I run my shop on. It creates my listings, crosslists them, and pulls items down everywhere when they sell. What it does not do is read your whole catalog against a brand new policy and tell you which listings break it. An AI assistant can do that check in minutes, including the sneaky ones buried in lots and bundles, and the brief for it is in the Playbook.

Confirm the final US details in your eBay notice or Seller Hub messages, since eBay had not posted a public US page at the time of writing.

Bottom line

If anything in your shop is a gift card, voucher, or prepaid card, plan for it to come down by November 12. Check for the hidden ones too, then get back to selling the stuff that is still allowed. Do less, earn more.
