Got a 1099-K for the First Time? Here’s What to Actually Do

A 1099-K showed up with your name on it and your stomach did a little flip. Deep breath. This form is not a bill, it is not an audit, and it does not mean you did anything wrong. It just means a platform reported the money that flowed through your account. Let’s make it boring.

What a 1099-K actually is

A 1099-K is a form the payment platform sends to you and the IRS showing your gross sales for the year. Gross is the key word. That number is everything buyers paid before fees, shipping, refunds, or what you originally paid for the item. It is not your profit, and you do not owe tax on the whole thing.

You generally only get one when you cross the reporting threshold, which for federal purposes in 2025 and 2026 is roughly $20,000 and 200 transactions. Some states set their own bar far lower, so a handful of sellers get a form at a much smaller number. Either way, the rule that never changes is this: you owe income tax on your profit whether or not a form ever shows up.

The steps to actually handle it

Do not ignore it, and do not panic. Work through it in order:

  • Match the gross number to your own records so you know it is right.
  • Report your sales on a Schedule C as business income.
  • Subtract what you paid for the items (your cost basis), platform fees, shipping labels, supplies, and mileage.
  • The number left over is what you are actually taxed on, and it is usually a fraction of that scary gross total.

The form looks intimidating because it leads with the biggest possible number, but your deductions are what bring it back down to reality.

The bottom line

A 1099-K is just a starting number, not a final answer. Track your sales and expenses all year and this form becomes a five-minute chore instead of a crisis. Grab my free Schedule C Expense Tracker so next year the receipts are already sorted. And check with your own tax pro on your specific situation – they will thank you for being this organized.
