Few things spike your heart rate like a login that suddenly fails – or an email saying your password and payout details were just changed. If someone got into your seller account, speed matters, but so does doing the steps in the right order. Here is how to take it back.
Move fast, in this order
- Try the official password reset first. If your email still works, you can often lock the intruder out in minutes.
- If your email was changed too, secure that email account first – everything else flows through it.
- Use the platform’s official “account compromised” or recovery flow. Go there by typing the address yourself, never through a link in a suspicious email.
- Once in, change the password, sign out all devices, and check that your payout account and shipping address were not swapped.
Check what the intruder touched
Attackers usually go for the money. Confirm your bank or payout details are yours, look for listings you did not create or orders you did not place, and review recent messages sent from your account. Report any fraudulent activity to the platform right away so you are on record and protected while it gets sorted.
Lock it down so it does not happen again
- Turn on two-factor authentication – ideally an authenticator app rather than text codes.
- Use a unique password you do not use anywhere else, stored in a password manager.
- Never enter your login on a page you reached from an email or DM. Go to the site directly.
- Be suspicious of any “urgent security” message. Urgency is the oldest trick in phishing.
Most account takeovers start with a phishing link, not a genius hacker. The single best defense is treating every unexpected login prompt as guilty until proven innocent. That one habit stops the vast majority of takeovers before they start.
Recovery flows and support contacts differ by platform and change – use only the official help center for your marketplace, and confirm current steps there before acting.
Bottom line
If you are locked out, act quickly but in order: secure your email, run the official recovery, check your money and listings, then bolt everything down with 2FA and unique passwords. A calm, methodical response beats a panicked one every time – and gets your shop back to working while you sleep. For more on protecting your reselling business, see my AI Reselling Playbook.
