You just opened your Depop shop, you have zero sales and zero reviews, and you are wondering if the algorithm is quietly punishing you for being new. Take a breath. Newness is not a penalty – it is just a starting line, and there is a lot you can do to sprint off it.
Does being new actually hurt you?
Not the way people fear. Depop is not blacklisting new shops. What is really happening is simpler: you have no reviews yet, so buyers have less reason to trust you, and you have few listings, so you have fewer chances to show up in search and browse. Both of those are fixable in your first week or two. Every established shop started exactly where you are.
What actually moves the needle early
- List more. A shop with 40 items gets found far more than a shop with 6. Volume is your fastest lever.
- Nail your photos and titles so you rank for what buyers search.
- Price competitively for your first handful of sales – those first reviews are worth more than a few extra dollars.
- Refresh and stay active. Consistent listing signals a live, real shop.
- Ship fast and pack nicely so your first reviews are glowing.
The first five-star review changes everything. Your whole early game is just getting to it as fast as possible.
The shortcut new sellers miss
Here is what separates shops that grow slowly from shops that take off: they do not rely on Depop alone. The same items, listed on eBay, Poshmark, Mercari and Vinted at the same time, get many more eyeballs – and a sale anywhere builds your momentum and your bankroll.
Doing that by hand is brutal when you are new and doing everything yourself. Nifty is how I list an item once and push it to every marketplace at once, then it detects the sale and pulls the item down everywhere else so you never oversell. For a brand-new seller, that is the difference between one small storefront and a presence everywhere shoppers already are.
Work smarter from day one
You do not need years of experience to run like a pro – you need good systems from the start. If you want the exact playbook I use to set up and scale a shop with automation doing the boring parts, it is all in my AI Reselling Playbook.
Bottom line
New does not mean invisible. List a lot, photograph well, price for those first reviews, and get your items in front of buyers on every platform, not just one. Momentum compounds – the sooner you start stacking listings and sales, the sooner “new shop” becomes “go-to shop.”
