This Week in Reseller Drama: Everything That Happened October 17-27

It has been a loud couple of weeks. If you blinked, you missed a lot, so here is the plain-English version of everything that happened for resellers from October 17 to 27.

eBay

  • Layoffs: eBay is cutting about 1,000 jobs, roughly 9 percent of its workforce, the second round this year.
  • Balance becomes mandatory on November 4: eligible US sellers are enrolled automatically and payout schedules reset to on-demand. Check your settings.
  • Privacy policy update, effective November 26: more disclosure about automated monitoring, AI training on user data, and automated decisions that can affect seller accounts.
  • eBay Live: select sellers get 0 percent commission on Live sales through October 29.
  • Reports that Promoted Listings General is showing a 5 percent minimum ad rate for some sellers. Value Added Resource could not confirm whether this is a glitch, a test, or a policy.
  • Complaints about Magical Listing: eBay says it boosts listings, but sellers report errors and no clear way to opt out.
  • The consignment seller Linda’s Stuff moved its operations from eBay to Poshmark.

Poshmark

  • Overweight shipping protection ended October 26. Packages over 5 lbs now cost you money if you do not upgrade the label.
  • Poshmark also stopped covering the USPS hazardous materials fee, so sellers now face the full $50 penalty.

Etsy

  • New AI rules: AI-generated patterns and instructions are banned, and listings need a real, unedited photo of the actual item.
  • Holiday fee break: 0 percent transaction fees on qualifying Share & Save orders through January 4, 2027.
  • Etsy is also testing capped shipping rates with discounts for US buyers.

Mercari

  • Free holiday shipping on $50+ orders through January 4, 2027, plus the return of Fashion Exchange.

Shipping

  • USPS plans a weekly variable fuel surcharge starting January 2027.
  • Pirate Ship stopped sending routine rate change alerts, and eBay warned sellers of more short-notice USPS Ground Advantage changes.
  • USPS, UPS, and FedEx prepaid rate increases took effect October 19.

Taxes

  • Texas is moving to exclude marketplace seller fees from a tax on data processing services. It could take effect as early as November 15, but it does not address refunds for tax already paid.

Whatnot

  • Launched its first nationwide US ad campaign and plans to expand in Europe.

The cost of keeping up by hand

Every one of those changes could touch your catalog. Re-checking 1,000 listings at 30 seconds each for just one of them is over 8 hours, and there were more than a dozen this week alone. It feels productive because you are busy, but it creates nothing and nobody pays you for it. This is exactly the busywork that eats weekends.

The smarter fix

Nifty lists once and sells everywhere, with sale detection keeping your inventory clean. What it does not do is stress test your pricing when shipping costs shift. An AI assistant can check which listings stop making money when postage moves, and the brief for it is in the Playbook.

Want to see how I run my shop on autopilot? The AI Reselling Playbook is where I share it.

Bottom line

Lots of noise, a few things that really matter: check your eBay payout settings before November 4, know your package weights, and review your Etsy listings. Do less, earn more.

New here? Nifty is the AI crosslister I use to list once and sell everywhere – and if you want in, my code ALEXIS44 gets you 15% off: https://nifty.ai/?referral=ALEXIS44
