Shipping costs just got harder to predict. USPS is planning a weekly variable fuel surcharge for 2027, and if you offer free or flat-rate shipping, you are going to want to pay attention.
What we know
- It is expected to start in January 2027, based on a USPS PostalPro FAQ.
- The surcharge is a percentage of base postage and can rise or fall every week.
- Priority Mail Express and Priority Mail are tied to jet fuel prices. USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select are tied to diesel prices.
- It applies to both retail and commercial shipments, including return services where applicable.
- Notice is short: about 3 to 4 days for jet fuel and 3 to 5 days for diesel.
- Packages carrying an outdated surcharge amount can be hit with postage due.
What we do not know yet
USPS has not shared the starting percentages, the formula, or whether there will be caps. It is also unclear how labels bought before a change but mailed after it will be handled, and whether marketplaces or third-party shippers get different terms. There is also a separate temporary 8 percent increase that began April 26 and is scheduled to expire January 17, 2027.
Why resellers should care
If you build shipping into your prices, you now have to guess a moving number. Pad it too much and buyers walk away. Pad it too little and you eat the difference. On marketplaces that take fees on the buyer total, higher shipping can mean higher fees too.
The cost of chasing it by hand
Imagine re-checking the shipping math on 1,000 listings every time the number moves. At 30 seconds each, that is over 8 hours a week. Do that all year and you are at roughly 430 hours, more than ten full working weeks, spent on busywork. It feels productive because you are moving, but it creates nothing and nobody pays you for it.
The smarter fix
The less you have to touch each listing, the less a rate change can hurt you. That is why I run everything through Nifty: list once, sell everywhere, and let sale detection keep things clean while you focus on sourcing.
Want the full playbook for putting your shop on autopilot? The AI Reselling Playbook is where I show you how I let AI run the boring parts of my business.
Nifty gets your listings out everywhere. What it does not do is stress test your catalog to show which listings stop making money when postage goes up. An AI assistant can run that check across every listing and hand you a safe price for each one, and the brief for it is in the Playbook.
Bottom line
Nothing changes until January, so you have time to plan. Watch for USPS to publish the actual percentages, and build a plan now so you are not scrambling later.
